QWaLC set to launch Green Nomads at caravan show

E-mail Print

Final preparations are underway by Queensland Water & Land Carers (QWaLC) to launch its volunteer placement program, called Green Nomads, at the upcoming 2009 Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Holiday Show.  Green Nomads is an exciting new initiative that will bring together travelers who wish to casually volunteer during their travels around Queensland with community NRM groups requiring assistance to undertake projects.

The initiative will draw together Australia’s large transient Grey Nomad population, with groups in the communities that they pass through.  The aim of the initiative is to increase opportunities for groups to access people resources and skills, enabling them to plan and implement larger, more labour intensive projects, with stronger conservation outcomes for their local communities.

This website will be the primary mechanism to link volunteers with groups requiring assistance.  Groups will be able to advertise their volunteering events on the website where Green Nomads will be able to browse (using a map and calendar) to identify opportunities they are interested in and can attend while undertaking their travels.  Details of what’s involved for both community NRM groups and volunteers who join the initiative will be included on the website. For hosting groups there are no costs associated with being involved, however for insurance purposes groups must be incorporated and registered with QWaLC.  Green Nomads can volunteer on private property BUT the landholder must be a member of a group who is registered with QWaLC, and the event formally sanctioned by the group’s Executive.  To find out if you group is registered with QWaLC contact Natalie on (07) 3252 7154.

In the lead up to the launch of the initiative QWaLC is recruiting groups to become hosts.  Any groups planning to undertake on ground activities over the coming months and would like to involve volunteers are asked to contact Nigel Kimball to discuss what’s involved.  Nigel can be contacted on 0427 029 488 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
